5" by 7" Photo

Size: 5"x7"

Create a work of art with a cherished photograph, transforming it into a beautiful painterly photographic encaustic.

This 5” by 7” piece can be created vertically or horizontally. It will have areas with a vignette appearance, and a clearer image around the center subjects. The encaustic medium (beeswax and resin) creates a misty and softened look. Creative textured marks and color enhancements will be added with various tools and oil paints.

The final piece will come with a mocha-black painted sides and back, with hanging hardware in the back. Each piece takes 2-3 weeks to complete and will be sent priority to ensure safety. It will arrive carefully packaged, with a protective storage box including wax paper and padding for long-term storage (please keep out of the extreme heat or cold).

A proof of the final cropping will be sent to you for approval prior to creating the work.

After purchasing your commission, please send a digital file of your photograph (jpeg or png) to The file should be at least 2 MB in size for a 5” by 7” commission. The larger the resolution, the sharper the details of the image will be (but even low resolution photographs from phones come out beautifully at this printed size).

A previously printed photograph or Polaroid, or even a vintage photograph can work as well. If you need help scanning a photo into a digital format, please contact Rebecca for additional options.

You're invited to read the Full Description below to learn more about encaustic works and how to care for them.

A photographic encaustic is the process of covering a thin layer of encaustic medium (beeswax and damar resin) over a mounted photograph (printed on an absorbent paper and glued and pressed to a panel), and then adding creative and highly expressive marks and color and additional layers of encaustic medium. The encaustic medium and oil colors are lightly fused, making a permanent and highly archival art piece. (The work will take up to 36 months to cure and reach its fullest hardness.)

Encaustic works should be protected, like any fine painting—avoiding direct sunlight and extreme temperatures (hot attics or cold cars, etc). Extreme heat or direct sunlight will cause the encaustic to melt around 150 degrees.  Extreme cold can make the encaustic brittle and may cause it to fog over (this is normal and can easily be lightly and very carefully polished with a fine soft polishing cloth).

If the piece becomes cracked form falling or some other impact, it can be repaired. Please contact Rebecca Rye Studio.
